Rescue Me ID: 14-09-24-00079Otis (male)

Havanese    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Heartworm Positive

What a sweet and kind Havanese our Otis is! At 2.5 - 3 years old and 14 lbs, Otis is an incredibly beautiful guy with a cotton-soft and flowing coat that speaks of the Havanese breed. (The shelter vet labeled Otis a PBVG. We and our Texas vet completely disagree and feel that Otis most resembles the Havanese breed). Havanese are a breed created by humans specifically for their adorable looks, great personalities and hypoallergenic/non-shedding coats. They are a mix that were initially bred in Cuba of the Maltese, Bichon and a Cuban breed... they have become one of the more popular small family pets in the US. We all know that when the ... (Read More)wag starts at the tail and becomes a full-blown body wiggle...Otis is greeting either a beloved friend or anyone who has the potential to be a future playmate. Otis is so warm and friendly that he always hopes every pat and kind word will turn into a lifelong friend. Both humans and other dogs are drawn to Otis for his positive attitude and kind ways - no human friend can keep from petting his soft coat (sorry about the sad and dirty shelter photo of this beautiful dog...we'll update with a photo that shows off this stunning pup properly) and enjoying his love affair (after some initial shyness) with the humans and animals in his life. It is this love of just about everything that motivates us to put Otis through Heartworm treatments..his precious life deserves to be saved! Otis has tested low HW+ and Farfel's (with the help of Rescued Pets Movement of Houston and Dr G in Denver) has volunteered to save this very special dog's life. The heart worm treatment process involves several shots followed by a short period of very quiet crate time for the dog. We have found this protocol to be very successful and the dogs go on to live long, happy lives. We are seeking an adopter to lovingly care for Otis through this process as he becomes Heartworm negative. It's quite an easy rehab process as it only entails quiet time with soft words and belly rubs. Farfel's will pay the vet bills and provide premium food and treats for this special pup as he grows healthily heartworm-free. We all really enjoy Otis's playfulness that is never aggressive...only fun-loving and sweet. It's very typical for a Havanese to be a great and devoted companion - they're known for their entertaining and kind ways. Otis would fit well into a family with kids 10+ (very young children can be tough on a dog that only weighs 14 lbs) and gentle smaller dogs would be great. Otis would benefit from positive reinforcement obedience classes that included the whole family - he is a super-smart guy who truly wants to please and great training will give Otis the skills to be an excellent adult dog. These type of classes will also bring out the great qualities of this Havanese as well as creating a tight-knit bonding with all family members. Otis is a non-shedding pup considered to be one of the most hypoallergenic of breeds. He will therefore require periodic grooming and great nutrition to keep his shining coat healthy and matt-free. Otis will be arriving on transport in Denver on 9/26. If interested in this sweet and beautiful Havanese, please fill out an application at http://farfelsrescue.com/adoption/ and submit to farfelsapps@gmail.com. (Less)
